Dallas – For guys like Tony Romo and Bradie James, tonight's Cowboys preseason game meant nothing. They hardly even stretched in warm-ups. For former SMU corner Bryan McCann, tonight might have been the most important night of his life. Although, he won't tell you that.

McCann is on the bubble to make the 53-man roster. If he isn't selected, he will be cut, and possibly picked back up to be a practice squad member by either the Cowboys or someone else. Or the possibility even remains that he showed another team enough to be considered for their 53-man roster.

“I wasn't necessarily playing for my life,” said McCann to PonyStampede.com after the game. “I tried to not put too much pressure on myself. I felt leading up to this game I put myself in a good position. I didn't want to go out and try to make plays that I didn't need to be trying to make. I just went out to have fun tonight.”

Seeing the most playing time he has since SMU's Hawaii Bowl trip last season, McCann started and led the Cowboys in tackles with seven. He also handled kick return duties in the fourth quarter.

On multiple occasions he was noticed in the press box for various things throughout the game by the media. In the 1st quarter, he chased down Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams from behind. A tackle that drew praises of “nice hustle.”

But, in the 4th quarter, he allowed a 3-yard touchdown pass to be caught by his receiver. Immediately there were whispers of, “he needed to jump that with the safety behind him.”

All in all, it was a good night. Now McCann waits like many other rookies. The Cowboys are expected to make their cuts on Saturday morning.

“Tonight's game was important, but as a corner you have to line up every play, every game with the same mentality. I have to guard this guy in front of me. I can't let things like the importance creep in my mind,” said McCann. “Now it's the waiting game. Hopefully I get signed to a roster (laughter). That's the plan (laughter). I feel that I have done my part and now it's in God's hands at this point.”

On multiple occasions the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff has pointed out the stellar play of McCann, so by all of their indications they seem to like the rookie. If it is not his time to make the 53-man squad, he should be asked to be on their practice squad. Which is ultimately the goal. A chance to have a professional football career.

“I definitely would be willing to come back, this is a great situation. I'm behind two Pro Bowl corners and secondary coach Dave Campo is one of the best defensive back coaches in the league, so I couldn't ask for a better situation to be in.”
