Wide Receiver Nyle Johnson of Capitol (Baton Rouge) received an SMU offer over the weekend and PonyStampede.com spoke with Johnson (6-0, 185, 4.4) this afternoon to get his reaction.

"I got offered by Coach Reinebold on Saturday," said Johnson, who transferred from University Lab to Capitol at the end of the 2009 season. "I love SMU. I know Coach Reinebold really well. He was talking to me yesterday about the education at SMU, about the campus and the people there, and how I'd fit in with their offense.

"He said that I would have a shot to come in and play as a freshman, that I could catch 100 passes a year there. There's a former University High player, Robert Lloyd, who plays safety at SMU and he has good things to say about it."

Johnson caught approximately 100 passes for 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns over the course of the past two seasons at University, but he wanted a change in scenery for his senior year.

"I had been at U-High since my eighth grade," Johnson said, "but I didn't feel like I was fitting in there. My family moved and I know that Coach (Chad) Germany at Capitol is a good coach - so I transferred there after the season ended last year. I felt that Capitol would prepare me well for the next level.

"At Capitol, the coaches work the players very hard, but it pays off in the end. Many people thought there would be a drop off at quarterback (at Capitol) after Terrance Broadway graduated, but we have two good QBs. The more athletic quarterback, Devin Stampley, actually starts at receiver, and the other quarterback - who is a sophomore - is more of a pocket passer. He knows the playbook backward and forward."

Johnson is already academically qualified, having scored a 22 on the ACT to go along with a 3.0 GPA. He holds offers from SMU, Tulane, ULM, Miami (Ohio), Arkansas State, Utah State, Alabama State, and Northern Illinois.
