PonyStampede.com has learned the Newman Smith running back Randall Joyner will be visiting SMU on an official visit this weekend. Joyner rushed for almost 1500 yards this season, collecting 24 rushing touchdowns in the process. Joyner currently has offers from the Mustangs and Sam Houston State.
PonyStampede.com first told you about Joyner back in July, but after Kevin Pope committed, it looked like he was going to be left out. Now, as signing day approaches, the Mustangs might be able to squeeze him in as an athlete, giving him looks as both a running back and safety.
"Well, what happened was that they recruited two other guys in Randall's spot and they both jumped early, leaving Randal out," said Coach Surratt of Newman Smith high school. "But Coach Morrison has been steady on recruiting him, visiting him and calling every chance that he was allowed, so it's sort of worked out."
Playing both ways, Joyner also recorded over 60 tackles and had a district high six interceptions. Newman Smith made the playoffs for the first time in 26 years this season, finishing the year 11-3.
"He was a fantastic player for us. He was a three-year captain since we first got there....His leadership qualities are second to none, fantastic in the locker room, he has a great attitude, and is one of the best players I have ever coached," said Suratt.
