Considered by many as one of the top prospects in the DFW area, Desoto running back Marcus Murphy played a crucial part in the Eagles 2008 season. A 5’9 170 pound tailback with a 4.48-forty, Murphy picked up two offers last weekend from Tulsa and SMU. He is also hearing from from California. Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, Miami, Oregon , Texas A&M, Northwestern, Kansas, Minnesota, and Stanford.

“I think that he is just a kid that will pick the best spot for him. Right now he is busting his butt this off-season. He knows that this spring is going to be huge for him when coaches start to come in and watch him,” said Desoto coach Claude Mathis. “He is keeping a one track mind and is taking care of what he needs to do in the classroom.”

Murphy has been starting varsity since his sophomore season. Last year he was named District 11-5A Offensive Player of the Year and received TexasPrepInsider.com third team all-area honors as he ran for 1274 yards and 17 touchdowns along with 524 receiving yards for 6 touchdowns. Very impressive numbers for someone who played defense the year before. As a sophomore Murphy was a cornerback and only got 20 carries as a running back. After putting up the numbers he did his junior year, Coach Mathis is very high on Murphy.

“My back is by far one of the best premiere backs in the state. I’m not being selfish here. I just know running backs,” said Mathis. “To me Murphy is one of the best backs in the nation. I have seen this kid play up close, I played running back, I know running backs and this kid has it all. He is one of the best in the nation….When the game was on the line we put the ball in his hands and he made things happen. Everyone in the stadium knew that he was going to get the football, and they still couldn’t stop him. That is what type of player he is.”

So what would Coach Mathis like to see him work on before next season?

“He needs to gain another ten pounds to get where I really want him to be at. He is going to get there. He needs to make sure he becomes a leader. He needs to be first in the weight room and not the last. He needs to lead by example. If he can do that he is going to be fine,” said Mathis. “The kid has all the talent in the world….. To me he reminds me of Marcus Allen. He has that long stride, he is smooth, he has great vision, he has great hands like Marcus Allen, he just doesn’t look like he is running, but he is burning butt out there. You are not going to catch him.”

So what is Murphy looking for in a school? On Monday night PonyStampede.com asked the recruit that very question.

“I want to go to a school where I feel really comfortable with the coaches and players…I want to see a little playing time early as well. It’s not a big deal, but a little,” said Murphy.”

Unable to check out any junior days because of track meets, Murphy says he has plans to hit spring games for SMU, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Texas, and Oklahoma.

Murphy was pass teammates with SMU 2009 recruit Chris Atchinson. Also wide receiver Terrance Wilkerson graduated from Desoto.

Murphy will have no problems qualifying for college. A great student of the game and in the classroom, Murphy has a 4.2 GPA and currently ranks in the top 5 in his class.
