To be the best you have to beat the best.
No one knows this any better than Southern Methodist University’s basketball coach Matt Doherty. The veteran coach and former North Carolina Tar Heel player realizes more than most that to have a Top 25 program you must recruit like one.
Doherty has put his Mustangs into the final four for Scout.com’s four star shooting guard Aaron Dotson of Seattle Washington. Dotson recently returned from his official visit from the Hilltop, with a great impression of Doherty and the SMU campus.
“It was a beautiful campus,” Dotson told PonyStampede.com. “Half the team went home for fall break. I got to go to the football game, it was a great game.”
Dotson continued with his impressions of Doherty.
“He is a good guy, always very honest with you, I like that a lot,” Dotson said. “He is an all around good guy. He was a great college player, he has been through the recruiting process, he knows what I’m going through, he relates very well with his players.”
Dotson has narrowed his choices to his final four, LSU, SMU, Louisville and Washington, while many may think that Washington may have the edge because it’s close to home, don’t be so sure.
“I’m not being pressure to stay close at home at all,” Dotson said. “That’s definitely not the case. They are one of my favorites; everyone is pretty even at this point. SMU is definitely still in the running for my services.”
Several things stood out about Dotson’s trip to the Hilltop.
“Dallas is a great city, a lot of great things to do. I got the chance to see the Maverick’s practice facility. I really liked the players on the team, they are really cool. I loved the Crum Practice facility.”
Dotson also said he wanted to go to a school with a great academic reputation as well as one that needs him the most.
“SMU gives me both of those things,” Dotson said. “Coach Doherty told me over and over how much he needed me on his team. The guys on the team stressed that fact also.”
Dotson will journey to Louisville this weekend followed by a trip to Washington; he has already made an official trip to LSU.
“It’s hard to compare LSU and SMU,” Dotson said. “I went to the football game at LSU and it was so slammed packed, the campus at SMU was kind of dead due to the kids being out on break. I like the fact that SMU is located in Dallas.”
According to Dotson he will make his decision sometime the week after his Washington visit, stay tuned to PonyStampede.com for the latest on his recruitment.
