Bonugli appears to be a top target for SMU

With 20 commitments already on the books for 2009, it appears that SMU will be looking for some help defensively with their remaining open spots. One of the state's top free safety's Joseph Bonugli of San Antonio's Earl Warren High School appears to be on the Mustang's radar.

It's no secret Southern Methodist University needs a few defenders to close out its 2009 recruiting class. The Mustangs are already sitting with 20 pledges including four grey shirts; expect the remainder to most likely be on the defensive side of the ball.

One of the state's top free safety's Joseph Bonugli of San Antonio's Earl Warren High School appears to be on the Mustang's radar.

"SMU is recruiting me hard," Bonugli told PonyStampede.com Monday night. "I most definitely have interest in the Mustangs. I like June Jones a lot; I know he will turn that program around."

Bonugli currently holds offers from SMU, Colorado State, and Army, plans on waiting to after his senior season before making a decision.

"I plan on waiting until the season is over to make a decision," Bonugli said. "I have been staying in contact with the SMU coaching staff a lot."

When asked if he currently has an early favorite, Bonugli didn't hesitate.

"SMU is definitely up there, they are high on my list," Bonugli said. "I plan on taking an unofficial visit there this fall for a game."

Bonugli got his senior season underway last Thursday night when Earl Warren lost to Converse Judson 23-12. The standout free safety ended the game with 12 tackles and more importantly had a kickoff return for over 40 yards.
