The Mustangs picked up its No. 12 commitment of the year when Servite High School's Mike Loftus made his pledge to SMU Thursday morning.

The standout kicker and punter are former teammates with Evan Huahulu, a good friend of Loftus.

"Evan was excited when I told him I was going to be a Mustang," Loftus told PonyStampede.com Thursday. "My hard work has paid off; I'm very excited about the opportunity."

Loftus made two trips this summer to the Dallas campus, one for a junior camp and one just to see the campus.

"It's a great school and a very nice campus in the middle of a big city," Loftus said. "One of the biggest reasons I chose SMU is the coaching staff, Coach Jones and Coach Gansz are incredible."

While SMU was his first and only offer, Loftus is being recruited hard by USC, Stanford and Cal Berkley.

"I know I made the right decision," Loftus said. "I can't wait to get there."
