Not every recruit has a top five list of universities he hopes to attend at this point in the process.
It can be hard to narrow your choices down to five with numerous programs showing interest especially when off-season practice has not even started.
That is not, however, why Jamal White of South Garland does not have a top five list.
The safety prospect does not need one.
White told PonyStampede.com Thursday night that he wants to attend Southern Methodist University which has not offered him a scholarship. White does, however, have offers from Kansas, Iowa State and Montana State.
Yet White is not budging. “That’s where I want to go,” he said of SMU. “It’s close to home and they have a good football program.”
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound safety said knowing people at the school, his aunt is a member of the women’s basketball coaching staff, and its academic prestige help as well. White hopes to be a police officer one day.
What really sold him on the Mustangs happened his freshman year before he had any chance to hear about the university. “SMU players used to come to the school and talk SMU to me,” he said. “I just fell in love with it.”
White attended the one-day camp held by SMU June 15 and said he enjoyed the experience. He said the coaches were nice and told him a lot about the school.
That may not, however, mean an offer is coming from the Mustangs despite his 4.4 speed and 83 tackles from last season.
White said he does not pay that any mind though. “I’m just waiting,” he said. “I will make a decision before two-a-days.”
Until that time comes, he will not need a top five list.
