One thing is for sure about the new coaching staff at Southern Methodist University, they aren’t shy or scared to battle some of the big boys in recruiting.
Under new head coach June Jones, the Mustangs already have three commitments for it’s 2009 class and are going after some of the state’s and area’s top athletes no matter who has offered them.
One such case is Shreveport’s Jonathan Stewart, middle linebacker from Byrd High School. Currently Byrd has 18 official offers including one from SMU.
“I definitely have interest in SMU,” Stewart told PonyStampede.com Saturday afternoon. “I hope to take an unofficial visit to their campus in the next few weeks. I have heard great things about SMU and their new coach.”
Stewart has offers from SMU, Cal, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Michigan, Duke, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Tennessee, ULM, Southern Miss, Oklahoma State and Arizona.
According to Stewart he isn’t ruling anyone out at this point.
“I plan on taking some trips this summer and check out schools first hand,” Stewart said. “I went to Junior Days at A&M, Miss. State, and LSU this spring. Right now I’m looking at everyone and keeping my options open. SMU has really come on strong in their recruitment.”
Stewart does plan on perhaps narrowing his list down perhaps as early as the end of the month.
“I want to cut the list down some,” Stewart said. “Hopefully I will get to see some of the schools before that happens. I won’t be attending any summer camps this year; I just plan on taking unofficial visits.”
Three things that are important to Stewart in picking a school are academics, the coaching staff and campus life.
Stewart has already scored a 20 on the ACT and has a 3.5 G.P.A.
