It’s apparent that new Southern Methodist University Head Football Coach June Jones and his coaching staff are currently focused on recruiting.
Another offer was given out this week; this one to Houston Strake Jesuit’s James Scott. The standout Houston athlete confirmed with PonyStampede.com Thursday night that he indeed received his first college offer.
“I was so happy,” Scott said. “I had a smile on my face all day Tuesday. I couldn’t believe it when my high school coach told me. I got the offer from SMU Tuesday, now I know that I will get the opportunity to play college football for sure.”
The offer has the Scott family doing a lot of talking and thinking about the new opportunity.
“I have been very close to committing to SMU,’ Scott said. “It’s a private school, a great education and a chance to play football. Those are all things that are very important to me.”
Scott and his family attended SMU’s junior day last month. They came away very impressed with the campus, facilities and the coaching staff.
“They have a great campus,” Scott said. “I didn’t get the chance to walk around it as much as I wanted to, but I loved what I saw. I loved watching the team in the spring game. They throw the ball a lot and I also liked the way they played defense.”
Scott, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound athlete who runs a 4.6 forty, plays quarterback and free safety for Jesuit. According to Scott, SMU wants the standout athlete to play free safety.
Scott wasn’t the only happy person in his family.
“My dad was more excited about the offer than I was,” Scott laughed. “He is proud of me.”
Scott likes the fact that SMU is close to home and that he has cousins that live in the Dallas area who can watch him play on Saturdays.
Scott has already scored a 1470 on the SAT and currently has a 3.2 G.P.A.
