Rapid Reaction: SMU Outlasts Rutgers

Come inside for our immediate reaction following SMU's victory!

How it happened: Rutgers tried to make a push midway through the second half, but the Mustangs hunkered down, went on an 8-0 run and never looked back. Markus Kennedy, who was in foul trouble the entire first half, had a solid second half, finishing with eight points and six rebounds. Nic Moore also turned in on in the second half, hitting three big three-pointers that helped hold off the Scarlet Knights. Moore finished with 21 points on 5-of-12 shooting and six assists, while Nick Russell and Cannen Cunningham added 16 and 10 points respectively. While the Mustangs let Rutgers mount a small comeback, SMU proved to be too talented and too deep for the Scarlet Knights.

What it means: Playing their first game as a ranked team in nearly 30 years, the Mustangs took care of business, despite having the game delayed a day because of bad weather. SMU showed they can play their game and win a so-called "trap game" on the road.

Side note: Crandall Head continued to see an increase in playing time, even checking in before Keith Frazier in the first half, but did not see any playing time in the second half. Neither Head or Frazier played in the second half, which could be a sign Larry Brown is finally cutting down his rotation.

Up Next: The Ponies will stay on the East Coast and travel to the Philadelphia-area to take on the Temple Owls. SMU just beat the Owls by 23 in Moody Coliseum a week ago. SMU will look to finish its small road trip 2-0 with a win against a Temple team that is 1-9 in AAC play.
