South Houston RB Darius Durall talks about his decision and more inside!

Jason Phillips has finally landed a commit from a school other than Houston Lamar.

Last Thursday, the SMU wide receivers coach made a trip down to the Houston-area to offer South Houston running back Darius Durall. Just a few days later, the 5-foot-8, 175-pounder committed to the Ponies.

“Coach Phillips came down to my high school last week and offered me. I was really excited since it was my first offer,” Durall said. “I talked to June Jones last night, and I told him I was committing. He said he was happy to have me and that I would be able to play for them next year.”

Durall did not hold any other offers but did receive interest from Houston, Houston Baptist and TCU. He said he pulled the trigger fairly quickly because of SMU’s reputation as a program on the rise.

“I have a lot of good friends that are going there, and they all told me really good things about the program,” Durall said. “I think I would feel comfortable there. I’ve been to Dallas before too. I actually played there last year, and it’s a nice city.”

The friends Durall is referring to are Houston Lamar commits Darrell Colbert, Braylon Hyder, Kyran Mitchell and Shelby Walker. As a junior, Durall rushed for just over 300 yards and helped Houston Lamar make a run to the state title game.

But he transferred to South Houston, where he rushed for 814 yards and 14 touchdowns, for his senior season. Still, Durall keeps in contact with his former teammates and can’t wait to reconnect with them on the Hilltop.

“I was actually talking to Darrell, and he told that they were all happy and excited that I had committed to SMU,” Durall said. “I think it’s going to bee cool to play with them again. I’m going to talk to Darrell more about SMU soon.”

At 5-foot-8, 175-pounds, Durall prides himself on his speed and elusiveness. He feels those to attributes will help him make an immediate impact in SMU’s Run N’ Shoot offense.

“Coach Phillips told me that I had some great film and that they really wanted a running back,” Durall said. “I know I can go in there and make plays. I would compare myself to Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson because we’re both balanced backs with speed, and we make plays.”

Durall has never been to SMU but will make his official visit on January 31. He says his commitment is solid and for now, he’s just looking to build a relationship with the staff and find out more about his future home.

“I don’t know a whole lot about SMU so I want to learn more, and I want to keep in contact with the coaches,” Durall said. “I heard a lot of good things about June Jones, and Coach Phillips seemed like a really nice guy.”
