FREE: Mitchell Commits To SMU
Posted Oct 31, 2013
Houston Lamar LB Kyran Mitchell talks about his new SMU offer inside!
had already landed three
Lamar players in the Class of 2014. And now No. 4 is in the bag.
On Wednesday morning, SMU wide receivers coach Jason Phillips, who has landed no players from any other high school, made his way to Houston Lamar and put an offer on the table for inside linebacker
“My linebackers coach and my head coach called me into the office. They told me that Coach Phillips had stopped by and that SMU had offered me,” Mitchell said. “I was really excited since it was my first offer.”
Before Wednesday, SMU hadn’t expressed much interest in Mitchell. He participated in the Mustangs’ summer satellite camp in Houston and talked to Phillips there but said he ‘didn’t hear much’ from him after that.
holding off on his decision, SMU decided to take a look at other linebackers to fill one of the few spots left in the 2014 class. And Mitchell became the top option.
“It’s a good school. The academics are great. From what I’ve seen, the coaches are really loyal,” Mitchell said. “I’ve watched them play on TV, and the team has been getting better the last few years. They’ve also moved to a better conference.”
The next step for Mitchell was pulling the trigger.
“I’m really thinking about committing. I just need to talk to Coach Phillips,” Mitchell said on Wednesday. “He couldn’t today because he was on a plane or something. But it would be great to play with Darrell (Colbert) and Braylon (Hyder) and Shelby (Walker) again. Braylon and Darrell were actually telling me to commit today.”
Mitchell did end up getting a hold of Coach Phillips and committed on Thursday afternoon.
At 6-foot-1, 205-pounds, Mitchell will need to bulk up but is likely to stay at inside linebacker. Mitchell compares his game to Kiko Alonzo of the Buffalo Bills because of his intensity and quickness.
This season, Mitchell has notched 54 tackles including 11.5 for loss and three sacks en route to leading Houston Lamar to an 8-0 start.
“I have great sideline to sideline speed and good instincts,” Mitchell said. “I think those are my strongest attributes. I think I’m having a good year and so is the team. People thought we were going to be down without Zelt (Minor) and Cedric (Lancaster), but we’re doing great so far. We’re just trying to get back to Dallas.”
