Khadeem Lattin talks about his recent Texas visit and what's up next in his recruiting.
Lattin Discusses SMU Interest
One of SMU's top targets is four-star center Khadeem Lattin from Canarias Basketball Academy in Houston. The 6-foot-9, 190-pounder paid close attention to the Mudiay news over the weekend.
"I didn't watch it, but I followed it on Twitter," he said. "That was a big boost for SMU and if Keith Frazier stayed, then that would be really great. I played with Keith last summer on Houston Hoops and that was really cool, so playing with both of them would be a great deal for me."
Lattin made an unofficial visit to the Hilltop in the spring and met with head coach Larry Brown and assistant coach Ulric Maligi. Maligi had been recruiting Lattin at Houston, so the two already had a good relationship in-place before he joined the Mustangs.
"Coach Larry Brown is just an awesome and amazing coach," he said. "Also Coach Maligi, who is in charge of my recruiting, is a real genuine guy. He loves what he's doing, and he was one of the first coaches to ever recruit me when he was at U of H."
Lattin does not have an official visit to SMU planned this fall because he says the coaches have slowed down their recruitment of him. But that has not affected the big man's interest in joining the Mustangs.
"Honestly, Coach Maligi has been recruiting me lightly," he said. "He hasn't been on me as hard but if he decides to pick up his recruitment, then it's definitely still on my list, and we will figure it out from there."
Lattin says SMU would be a ‘perfect fit' for him because of its location, facilities and coaching staff. He stressed the importance of finding a coach who will utilize his skill set appropriately.
"The most important thing is finding a head coach that loves me and will let me play the five," he said. "I want a basketball coach that will really know how to play me and where to play me. I feel like Coach Larry Brown is definitely one of those guys who can do that."
Lattin holds offers from Baylor, Georgetown, Houston, Marquette, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas A&M, USC and more. He doesn't know when he will commit, but hopes to hear from SMU soon.
"It's a good school," he said. "I like it because it's really close to home so I wouldn't have to go to far. I love the campus. It's a gorgeous campus and Dallas is a great city, so it's pretty cool."
