Hill Targeting Mammoth OL
At 6-foot-6, 295-pounds, McHary is an imposing figure in the trenches and still has plenty of room to grow. His recruitment is expected to heat up as he heads into his junior season but thanks to early contact with Hill, SMU is currently at the top of his list.
"SMU is pretty much my favorite right now. It means a lot to me that Coach Hill sent me my first letter. It's also a really good school," he said. "If you don't make it for football, SMU offers a Plan B and a foundation to fall back on with a great education. It just happens that I love the school and the campus."
The feeling appears to be mutual, and McHardy received some more good news regarding SMU this week when he conversed with Hill over the phone.
"Coach Hill invited me up for a visit. He actually sent me my first ever letter back in spring saying he wanted to keep in contact and build a relationship," McHardy said. "He sent me another hand-written letter the other day so I gave him a call, and we talked about the visit and how we would talk about an offer when I got up there.
"Talking to Coach Hill really changed my perspective about SMU football. I think it would be a great place to play, and I'm looking forward to the visit. If Coach Hill offers me, I would be very excited and may be committed to SMU by 2015. I mean, that would be mind-blowing."
McHardy will be on the Hilltop for SMU's season opener against Texas Tech and may also stop by for a visit before then to check out a fall camp practice.
McHardy has only been playing football for a few years and says he's still working on fundamentals and learning from teammate Zach Rogers, who made a visit to SMU earlier this spring and is one of the top 2015 offensive linemen in the state.
"Zach has been playing a lot longer than I have so I'm still learning the ropes from him. I also plan on asking him his thoughts on SMU," McHardy said. "This summer, I'm working on my speed and strength. I feel like I'm very flexible and will take on whatever gets thrown at me."
Sam Houston State has also been in contact with McHardy, and he plans on camping at Oklahoma later this summer.
