FREE: Severt Commits To SMU
Posted Jun 14, 2013
Austin Westlake QB Jordan Severt committed to SMU. More inside!
already has a quarterback pledge in the Class of 2014. But that doesn’t bother
“I think it’s great to have that competition,” he said. “We have pretty different skill sets so I think it’s going to be great to compete with him.
On Friday afternoon, Severt pulled the trigger and committed to SMU. The Austin Westlake signal caller has held an offer from the Mustangs since last summer and although he waited almost a year to give a verbal pledge, he always knew SMU was the right place for him.
“I’ve wanted to go to SMU for a while now, but I was just waiting. Today, I just said there is no reason to so I decided to commit,” Severt said. “I called Coach (Bert) Hill, and he was very proud of. He told me he was excited to have me. I was super excited to make my decision and get the weight off my shoulders.
“SMU is just a great school. Education was the No. 1 factor. They have a super nice campus right by downtown Dallas so I like that a lot, and the facilities were really nice too.”
Severt said the only other school in the picture was
. But the Bears received a commitment from
on Thursday night, which swayed Severt to pick the Ponies.
As a junior, the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder passed for 2,713 yards and 21 touchdowns and feels he can be a perfect fit in SMU’s Run N’ Shoot offense.
“I think I can excel in the offense. They like to pass the ball a lot, and I like to pass the ball a lot so it’s a great offense for me,” he said. “I talked to Coach (Dan) Morrison, and he believes in me. He told me that he was really happy to have me as part of the family.”
Severt also had a brief chat with SMU head coach June Jones at the Mustangs’ satellite camp in Round Rock last week and believes he can learn a lot from the ‘quarterback guru.’
“I got to meet Coach Jones, and he just asked how I was doing and how the recruiting process was going,” Severt said. “He’s had a lot of success with quarterbacks so that’s a plus. He’s very calm. I don’t like coaches that yell and get the team too wild so I think he would be a great coach to play for.”
Severt says his commitment is solid and plans on returning to the Hilltop for an unofficial visit ‘soon.’
