Chad Pursley knew all along he wanted to be a Mustang. After all, SMU was the first and only school to extend an offer. and his relationship with graduate assistant Tommy Poynter was as strong as could be.
On Friday afternoon, the Mansfield Legacy offensive tackle made the call and officially committed to SMU.
"I was talking to Coach Poynter at my spring game, and I told him I was ready to commit," Pursley said. "So today I gave him a call during my off period, and I told him I was committing. He was really happy and glad that I decided to do it.
"First of all SMU is close to home. I really like the campus, the coaches, and just the whole vibe. The biggest factor in my decision was probably the connections you can have afterwards. Academics are definitely important to me. My parents were really happy about it too."
At 6-foot-5, 245-pounds, Pursley will have to bulk up in order to make an impact along the offensive line on the Hilltop. This offseason, he has already gained 10 pounds and is looking to add more this summer.
Poynter was a three-year letterman at SMU from 2006-2008, earning a scholarship after walking on in 2004. He put on 50 pounds and eventually earned a starting job as an offensive lineman. Pursley hopes to follow in his footsteps.
"I think Coach Poynter is a great coach, and I can learn from him. The plan is to play offensive lineman for him," said Pursley, who also plays defensive end. "I've been doing the whole nine yards in order to beef up. I've been eating a lot and lifting a lot of weights."
Pursley also feels he can develop under the guidance of SMU offensive line coach Wes Suan after watching him in action at SMU's spring game.
"I saw him really push his players in practice. I think I'll like playing for him," Pursley said. "I thought he was a really cool coach. He told me he really liked my athleticism, and he just needs to see me bulk up."
Houston, Louisiana Tech and Tulsa are just some of the schools showing strong interest in Pursley, but he says his commitment to SMU is '99 percent solid.' Pursley will attend SMU's camp this weekend.
