Jacobs Discusses SMU Offer
But defensive coordinator Tom Mason made the short trip down I-35 south and was so impressed with Jacobs that he decided to extend a scholarship soon after.
"My high school coach called me out of class and told me about it. I had no idea that they were going to offer me," Jacobs said. "I was really surprised because they had never contacted me. When I found out, I was really excited about it."
At 6-foot-4, 215-pounds with 4.5 speed, Jacobs has the attributes to truly excel in SMU's 3-4 scheme and says he enjoyed speaking to Mason about how he would fit into his defense.
"He was at our practice, and I called him after I got the offer, and he told me that I have a lot of potential. He said that I can come into the program and that he'll mold me into a great player," Jacobs said. "I will probably be at outside linebacker, but it just depends on how much weight I gain."
Jacobs has been adding muscle this season as he makes the transition to defensive end for his senior season. Wherever he lines up, Jacobs is sure to make plays. But will it be on the Hilltop? Jacobs is strongly considering it.
"I'm interested in SMU because it's a great school. They have great academics especially their law school," said Jacobs, who maintains a 3.6 GPA. "The football program is rising up and could be back at the top soon. Being in Dallas is a plus too since I'm originally from there. I'm going to get in contact with (former teammate) Shakiel Randolph to see how he likes everything there."
There is reason for optimism since Jacobs is expressing early interest in SMU despite having yet to form any type of relationship with the coaching staff, but the Ponies will face some stiff competition.
Baylor and Oregon State have both offered while Houston, Oklahoma, Rice and Washington are showing strong interest. But it appears the Bears are leading the pack. Baylor was the first school to offer Jacobs, and he's been on campus for numerous unofficial visits.
"I really like Baylor. I'm very familiar with their coaches since I've known them for a while. Baylor kind of just feels like home," he said. "I just want to go to a place that has that home feel and wants to contend for national titles."
Jacobs plans on committing next month but says he wants to make a visit to SMU before he makes his decision.
