Proche Still Interested In SMU

2015 Prime Prep WR James Proche picked up an offer from SMU in the fall and recently visited for junior day. Where do the Ponies stand on his short list? Come inside to find out!

It comes as no surprise that SMU is getting a jump-start on James Proche. The 2015 Prime Prep receiver picked up an offer just a few short months ago partially because of the relationship between his head coach Deion Sanders and SMU wide receivers coach Jason Phillips.

"Coach Sanders has talked to me a lot about Coach Phillips and that he would be a great person to play for," Proche said. "When I spoke to Coach Phillips at junior day, he was really honest with me. He wants to keep my family involved in the process and thinks I can be a great receiver."

Although Proche, who has received interest from schools such as California, Oklahoma State and TCU, has plenty of time to weigh his options, SMU is currently one of his favorites. Proche was on the Hilltop for a couple of unofficial visits this past season and was back for junior day last month.

"I liked SMU a lot. I loved how we got to see more of the facilities because they are top notch," Proche said. "The talked about their relationship with the Cowboys, and I thought that was really cool. Their field is kind of like a high school field, but I liked that. Playing in smaller stadium is something I'm used to.

"I also liked the academics. My goal is to obviously play in the NFL one day but if that doesn't happen, SMU is a great school. I just want to see the campus more and make sure it has a friendly environment."

Proche didn't make the trip alone. 2014 Prime Prep linebacker Josh Ehambe, who also holds an SMU offer, also attended junior day. The duo have spoken about playing at the next level together and were pulled aside by SMU head coach June Jones.

"It was great to meet Coach Jones. He said he heard a lot about us and really liked the way we played," Proche said. "Josh is an amazing teammate and a great man of God. He liked SMU too, and I would love to keep playing with him."

In a shortened season last year, the 6-foot, 180-pounder led Prime Prep with 11 receptions for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Proche is excited about having a full schedule this season and has been working vigorously this spring.

"I'm super excited for spring ball. I've been working really hard this offseason," Proche said. "I want to show people that I'm an elite receiver. I pride myself in having great hands and not dropping passes. I'm just working more and more on my speed."
