FREE: Gentry Commits To SMU
"I've never liked a school as much as SMU. There were no negatives. My parents loved SMU as well. We were just wowed by everything about it," he said. "The campus is built around the boulevard, and I like that it's small."
While on the Hilltop, Gentry has the opportunity to take in an SMU football practice, and was impressed with the way the coaches taught their players. Gentry has only played the sport for a year and feels he needs a staff that will be hands on so he can further develop his game.
"I liked the way the coaches coach. They were more on the teaching side so feel like I can learn more about my position," Gentry said. "My high school coaches were teachers like them. They taught me a lot. I feel like if Bert Hill is my coach, I can learn a lot from him."
Gentry and Hill bonded over dinner during his official visit and discussed the possibility of becoming a Mustang.
"I spent a lot of time with Coach Hill. I went out to eat with him, and he said they wanted me to come in and redshirt so I can continue to catch on. He said after that, I could compete for a starting job in my second year.
"I also got to talk to Coach (June) Jones, and I really like him a lot. My parents and I talked to him for a little bit, and I feel like he has it together. He's really bringing this program up."
Both Hill and Jones told Gentry about current SMU defensive end Margus Hunt, who had no experience playing football before he joined the team. After learning more about Hunt, Gentry feels like he can follow in his footsteps.
"They talked to me a lot about Margus Hunt. He had never played football and now, he's going to be drafted in the first two rounds of the NFL draft," Gentry said. "Knowing that he had never played before helps a lot because I know Coach Hill would help me succeed like Hunt. Coach Jones said that I was a quick learner and ahead of where Margus was two years ago."
Gentry also held offers from Louisiana Tech and Purdue, but his commitment to SMU is solid.
