SMU Offers Georgia Speedster

SMU extended an offer to Our Lady of Mercy (GA) three-star athlete Rashard Fant on Wednesday. Fant currently holds offers from over ten schools headlined by ACC powerhouse Florida State.

SMU is looking to boost its class of 2013 recruitment by landing a big-time recruit out of the peach state. On Wednesday, the Mustangs called coaches from Our Lady of Mercy High School (GA) to extend an offer to three-star athlete Rashard Fant.

Fant, who has yet to speak with the SMU coaching staff personally, said one of his coaches pulled him aside before practice and told him SMU had called and extended an offer. Fant said that it's a blessing that SMU feels that he's good enough to receive an offer.

"It's a good school," said the 5-foot-10, 160-pound Fant. "It has a lot of history behind the name, and it's in Dallas, which is a great area for football. Its just a real blessing to have an offer come from there."

Fant, who plays both wide receiver and cornerback, has been highly touted for his 4.37 speed and versatility to play on both sides of the ball. Last season, Fant racked up over 1,400 all-purpose yards and scored 15 touchdowns and also recorded 40 tackles and three interceptions. He currently holds offers from Florida State, Kentucky, Indiana, Utah and Ole Miss as well as others.

"I'm definitely excited because about four months ago I had zero offers," Fant said. "I was just kind of hoping that someone sees all the hard work I'm putting in. I was just praying a lot hoping that one offer would come through and one did. Now four months later, I have about ten or eleven of them."

Fant thinks he has the skill set to be able to play both cornerback and wide receiver at the next level and would love the opportunity to make an impact on both offense and defense. Thus far, Fant says that he's been recruited at both positions and is looking forward to playing any position that the school he chooses needs him to.

"I would like to play corner and receiver and make an impact on both sides of the ball but wherever the school I feel comfortable at wants me to play and needs me the most, I'll definitely go there for them," Fant said.

Fant says that right now his top three choices include FSU, Indiana, and Kentucky in no particular order with Utah bringing up the rear.

"It's just a blessing to know that I'm going to college for free if I just keep doing what I'm doing and keep my head on straight," he said.
