Garland (TX) Linebacker Nick Horton knew that he wanted to be a Mustang and on Thursday evening sent in an email to defensive coordinator Tom Mason with his decision.
"I committed yesterday," Horton said. "I talked to Coach Mason and sent him an email around 6:40 (pm) and he hit me back around 12:00am our time."
Mason had been in regular contact with Horton but was summoned to coach at an event in Japan.
Horton, who visited the Hilltop last weekend, had been on the fringe of committing since his visit but wanted to discuss the decision with his parents beforehand.
"They were excited," Horton said. "They gave me the blessing to commit wherever I wanted to and they're real excited because they'll get to see me play at a lot of home games."
Horton, who will play outside linebacker for the Mustangs, said that he was excited when he got the chance to see a large portion of the campus during his visit.
"(Mason) showed me around the athletic parts. He showed me the weight room and all the training facilities, and he gave me a tour around the campus," Horton said. "He showed me all of the dorms and frat houses and all that."
Mason looks forward to having a new weapon on the field and made it his priority to welcome Horton first thing Friday morning.
"He told me he was real excited to coach me," Horton said. "And he's pretty sure that I'll be a great linebacker at SMU."
