2014 athlete Ronnie LaRue has already seen SMU's campus many times and is hoping for an offer
Red Oak (TX) athlete
Ronnie LaRue
is drawing major interest from college football powerhouses around the nation but when comes to
SMU
, the only word the Class of 2014 prospect can utter is ‘love.’
“I really love how SMU is an up and coming program, and they used to be not as good. Now, they’re kind of one of the top teams in the country,” LaRue said. “I also like the old school campus, and the facilities are nice. I really just like everything about it.”
LaRue has been on the Hilltop numerous times this year. Most recently, he participated in SMU’s summer camp despite having to battle a broken toe. Still, the safety, who also doubles as a quarterback, was able to shine and impress the Mustang coaching staff.
“I went up there with a broken toe so I didn’t do as well as I could have, but I still feel I did good,” LaRue said. “Coach (June) Jones pulled me aside and talked to me for a little while. It was a really good experience.”
Through his many visits to SMU, LaRue has been able to build a special bond with the coaching staff and frequently speaks with defensive line coach Bert Hill.
“I really love the coaches. Coach Hill is the one that has been recruiting me so I talk to him the most. He really wants what’s best for me and SMU,” he said. “I went up their for the spring game and for a visit so I’ve gotten to talk to all of them. June Jones is a really nice guy. He just wants to win, and that’s what I really like about him.”
LaRue says he’s been working out vigorously this summer in hopes of earning his first offer. If SMU decides to jump on the Larue bandwagon and extend a scholarship, the 6-foot, 180-pounder could reward the Mustangs with a commitment.
“I’m expecting an offer. If I do really good this year, I feel like there will be one there,” LaRue said. “SMU is definitely my favorite right now. If SMU offers me, I’m definitely going to consider committing.”
LaRue recorded 58 tackles and three interceptions last season. He will round out the summer by partaking in camps at
Arkansas
and
Arkansas State
in mid-July.
