June Jones just can't resist a good projected slot receiver. With an extra scholarship to hand out due to Kevin Galindo heading to Arkansas State, SMU quietly scooped up St. Johns (TX) athlete Caldwell Flores late in the 2011 recruiting process.
"I did do some SMU camps and stuff, but they weren't exactly my first choice. I'm a bit of an academic I guess you would say. I committed to Yale over the summer after doing one of their camps, but was looking at schools in the Ivy League.
"Well, I sort of got persuaded to start talking to SMU and Duke. It was just closer to home, so I felt a little more comfortable here. In the end, they asked me if I would take the offer if they gave me one. I told them yes, and here we are today."
Flores rushed for 994 yards and 12 TDs for St. Johns, which plays in the Southwest Prep league down in Houston. He also had one touchdown catch.
"I have been told slot receiver, but I'm actually a bit bigger than the numbers suggest. I have been working out and I'm now about 6-foot-1, 210 pounds.
"I don't know if it's where I end up, they may move me around. In the end, I just really want to get up there and play whatever position they need me to play at. It doesn't bother me, I just want to help the team."
Flores' sister attends SMU as a sophomore so the 2011 signee is very familiar with the campus. He did take an official visit a few weeks ago.
