Hood Ready To Make Instant Impact

"After touring the campus, seeing the great facilities, and really getting a chance to meet the coaching staff, I just really felt it was a good fit for me," - Maurice Hood on his commitment to SMU.

Coming out of high school, Maurice Hood signed with Stephen F. Austin, but after failing to qualify academically, Hood decided to head to Tyler J.C.

Tyler was just the best place for me," Hood told JCFootball.com. "I liked the staff here and I felt like I could stay focused on football and school and that would help me get to where I wanted to be."

Now his focus has paid off. On Sunday afternoon, Hood committed to SMU. The sophomore will be getting a great education in the future, while SMU gets much needed experience in the secondary.

"After touring the campus, seeing the great facilities, and really getting a chance to meet the coaching staff, I just really felt it was a good fit for me," said Hood to Scout on Sunday afternoon. "The campus was really nice. Everything I saw looked almost perfect.

"As far as football, they told me they were going to move me around, throw a nickel package in for me, and put me at corner. They hope that I can fit into the position to help the team. Immediate playing time really factored into my decision."

A junior college All-American this past season, Hood registered 97 tackles, six sacks, and one interception in 2010. Numbers that were actually down from his freshman year (107 tackles, three interceptions, and three sacks).

"SFA, UTEP, Pittsburgh, and North Texas were all showing me interest. SFA was really the only one that officially offered in D-1," said Hood.

The 5-foot-11, 190 pound defensive back is a very physical player. He feels that he does a good job reading defenses whether it's the run or the pass.
