SMU will travel to UTEP this week without the services of senior kicker/punter Matt Szymanski. The senior has had hamstring issues all year.
“He pulled his leg muscle, so he won't kick this week for sure. This weekend he did pull it. It's not just tight,” said SMU head coach June Jones on Tuesday. “It's disappointing.”
Szymanski is 23-for-23 this year on extra points and is 6-for-8 on field goals, his misses coming from 40+ yards. On punts, he is averaging 40.7 yards.
“Its like any wide receiver or skilled position. He will go when he can go,” said Jones. “I like the kids behind him, but they are not game proven like Matt. They will have to grow up fast. I will definitely think about it on long field goals.”
Replacing the senior at kicker is Marcelo Sada. On the year he is 10-for-10 with extra points, but has missed his only field goal opportunity.
