North Vermilion RB putting up big numbers

Zach Bourque was a solid strong safety last year for North Vermilion HS, but he's elevated his game to a whole new level in 2010. The primary weapon for the Patriots, the senior - now a tailback - has been instrumental to his team's offensive success.

North Vermilion may be 0-2 -- and that doesn't sit well with senior tailback Zach Bourque -- but he's recording outstanding numbers, nonetheless, as the breadwinner for the Patriots' offense.

"We were flat coming into our first game (with Ville Platte)," said Bourque, "and we got down 22-0. They had a lot of athletes, but once we settled down, they couldn't stop our power-I.

"Most of my yardage came on the same play, the 47 power. I had 220 yards rushing on 26 carries, with a long of 30 yards, and two touchdowns. I also had two catches for 50 yards, including a 40-yard TD."

Ville Platte edged North Vermilion, 37-35, and the 3A Patriots lost another high-scoring affair (40-27) last night to Riverside Academy, which is one of the favorites in Class 2A this year.

"We came out with a lot more fire against Riverside," said Bourque. "We drove into their territory to start the game, but our QB was tackled as he made an option pitch and we turned it over on a fumble.

"Not long after that, Riverside threw a screen pass and I was able to strip the ball, recover it, and return it for a touchdown. It was from probably 50 yards out.

"I had 100 yards rushing on seven carries and 20 receiving yards, but I didn't play in the second half. My back was cramping up and the coaches held me out.

"They hit hard. They're huge and their QB (Darnell Rachal) and RB (Thomas Crouch) are both beasts. They're good guys too. I talked to them after the game."

In the jamboree, Bourque ran for a 76-yard TD and had a 30-yard pick-six vs. Church Point. He's hearing from Henderson State and Trinity (San Antonio).
